Bruins forward Fabian Lysell running out of chances to prove himself

The good news for Fabian Lysell He is a year older more physically and mentally mature and he now has at least a small body of work in the National Hockey League from which he has to work as he prepares for the opening of training camp on Sept The bad news Making the Bruins roster though not exactly chock-full of high-end talent appears even harder to make for him than it was last year Part of that is because the B s re-stocked their roster with selected reliable veterans in Viktor Arvidsson Tanner Jeannot Sean Kuraly and Mikey Eysssimont Another part of it is that it appears the first-round pick has been surpassed in the pipeline by younger players Matt Poitras and Fraser Minten acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Brandon Carlo exchange as well as Marat Khusnutdinov obtained from the Minnesota Wild in the Justin Brazeau deal While Lysell is aware of the landscape he s facing there s not much he can do about it other perform at a high level That s how it is noted a seemingly unperturbed Lysell Guys are coming in and I haven t thought too much about that I m focusing on my summer training and getting ready to get back here The -year-old Lysell selected with the st overall pick in the draft has to do a better job of seizing his opportunity and right now than he did last training camp He was a non-factor in the B s first preseason battle and though he played better in subsequent games he had apparently dug too deep a hole for himself to make the opening night roster Lysell did get a Christmas present call-up for a meeting against Columbus but despite playing well was sent back to Providence until he was brought up for games after the arrangement deadline Lysell who had a goal and three assists established flashes of the skill that made him a first-round pick but not enough for anyone to dub him a can t-miss kid But he does believe he was able to take several valuable instruction from his brief NHL experience It was a lot of fun getting the opportunity to go up and just play the games It s such a fun place to be around and you learn a lot from each day so there was definitely a motivation factor going into the summer and having that in the back of my mind announced Lysell Not just your body but in your mind you ve got to be sharp at all times because everything happens fast and guys are super smart so you ve just got be alert all the time That s presumably the main takeaway I took from those games Lysell spent majority of of his summer skating back home in Stockholm Last summer was building muscle and strength and this summer was more of a progression to power and speed My body feels fresher in a way he noted The Swede was drafted as a highly skilled forward with the ability to dazzle at times though certain critics saw him as a sportsman who spent too much time on the perimeter tended to hang on to the puck when he should move it and not exactly a -foot sportsman At - pounds Lysell may never be a sportsman that lives on the inside ice but he can do certain more things that would unlock his skill With every training camp you gain more experience reported Lysell For me I just want to show that I m an older competitor in such a way that I can take more responsibility on the ice That s a big part of it that we ve talked about now for a couple of years That s presumably going to be my main focus going into camp the details not just with the puck but without the puck and being responsible in that way That s where my main focus goes And then my other part of the event is going to come with time He also knows he must move the puck Boston Bruins forward Fabian Lysell skates during pre-game warmups prior to a Dec contest against Columbus at the TD Garden Herald file photo It s hard to beat defenders one-on-one all the time stated Lysell There s not a lot of guys who can do that You ve got to use your teammates and be alert in the mind use them quick and then take another area of the ice that s usually open Usually the scoring chances are when you get the puck back That s how I can use my speed to my advantage Thus far Lysell s had a good not great AHL career one in which he s suffered various injuries and a limited healthy scratches Providence coach Ryan Mougenel has expressed selected frustration with him at times In AHL games he has - - totals The road to the NHL has undoubtedly had more potholes than he would have expected when was an -year-old first-rounder He s not the first player to get that reality check For particular guys they go right in and for other guys it takes more time mentioned Lysell Patience is a big part of that That s definitely an area where I ve felt I ve gotten a little better at now since I came in the first time But with that being noted I feel stronger I feel faster and more ready in my mind It ll be a lot of fun when it starts on the th Fun yes but it will also take a lot of work for Lysell to make the big league roster
